The one piece of infrastructure you need first

Before your first taka goes into a mutual fund, there's one piece of infrastructure you need: a Beneficiary Owner (BO) account.

A BO account is essentially your electronic share/security holding account, maintained through the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) via a brokerage house. It's mandatory — not optional — for investing in mutual funds or listed securities in Bangladesh, because units are credited to it electronically rather than issued as physical certificates. [The mutual fund industry is now working on a solution to allow investors without BO account to invest in mutual funds. Until the process is formalized BO remains mandatory]

What opening one actually takes

Opening one takes a short visit (or, increasingly, a digital process) to any brokerage house. You'll need: 3 passport-sized photographs, a copy of your NID or passport, a copy of a bank statement or cheque leaf, and your nominee's photograph and NID copy (attested by you). Brokerage houses charge an annual maintenance fee, currently BDT150 per year.

Once your BO account exists, you'll also need a standard bank account for auto-debit or transfer purposes, and — while not mandatory — an e-TIN certificate.

The whole thing typically takes a day or two from application to an active account, and it only needs to be done once — after that, it's the account you'll use for every future mutual fund or stock investment.
